Caroline Knowles Gregory and Andrew Bennett Mazey were united in marriage on the evening of August 22, 2015 on the grounds of Boone Hall Plantation in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina. The ceremony was officiated by Reverend Doctor Bryan Collier.
The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Hood Gregory of Okolona, Mississippi. She is the granddaughter of the late Brigadier General and Mrs. Van Tankersley Stubbs, Sr. of Baldwyn, Mississippi, and the late Mr. and Mrs. William Harrison Gregory, Sr. of Okolona.
The groom is the son of Doctor and Mrs. Richard Michael Mazey of Mobile, Alabama. He is the grandson of Mrs. Leslie Ernest Karr and the late Doctor Karr of Corbin, Kentucky, and Mrs. James Fitxpatrick Morrissey of Louisville, Kentucky, and the late Mr. Lawrence Mazey.
Escorted by her father, the bride wore a Lela Rose designer brocade deep v-neck gown with full skirt and chapel length train. The bride wore two sapphire and diamond bracelets that belonged to her sister and grandmother. The bride’s bouquet was a loose, natural shape, capturing the garden-like look of the wedding florals. Shades of ivory and white, with accents of faint blush, featured garden roses, tulips, gardenia with seeded eucalyptus and wrapped with a treasured family handkerchief from her maternal great-grandmother. She wore a single Garden O’hara blush pink flower in her hair.
Attending the bride as maid of honor was her sister, Patricia Simmons Gregory of New York, New York, and serving as matron of honor was her sister, Susannah Gregory Whitehead of Memphis, Tennessee. Bridesmaids were Caitlin Brady Costello of New York, New York, Ellen Michele Dennis of Memphis, Tennessee, Kathleen Marlowe Galloway of Nashville, Tennessee, Myra Morgan Mazey of Los Angeles, California, Kristin Nicole Randle of Chattanooga, Tennessee, Katherine Elizabeth Sangervasi of New York, New York, Laurie Hunt Spradley of New York, New York and Sally Katherine White of New Orleans, Louisiana. Styled by the bride’s sister’s luxury styling service, Armarium, her sisters wore Lela Rose hand-painted cotton chiffon floor length halter dresses and her maids wore ivory chiffon high neck sleeveless gowns from the J Crew bridal collection. Emulating the bride’s bouquet in style, attendants carried smaller bouquets of ivory spray garden roses and O’hara garden roses with a touch of greenery.
Doctor Richard Michael Mazey, father of the groom, and Wynn Leighton Mazey, triplet of the groom, served as best men. Groomsmen were Sloan Lowry Abernathy of New Orleans, Louisiana, Seth Frederic Capper of Birmingham, Alabama, Brian Campbell Delaney of Chicago, Illinois, George Edgar Downing, III of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Andrew Cook Grumney of New York, New York, Jamison Tyler Mazey of Atlanta, Georgia, Michael Seth Mazey of New York, New York, Alexander Raymond Meder of Hoboken, New Jersey, Greg Dawless Smith of New York, New York, Tyler Johnston Pauli Smith of Atlanta, Georgia and Woodson Cary Whitehead of Memphis, Tennessee.
Lara Katelin Anderson of Savannah, Georgia, and Angela Kristine Link of Southlake, Texas, read scripture. Greeting the guests was Isobel Parker Mills of New York, New York.
The ceremony site was created on the lawn of the plantation with the picturesque moss-laden oak trees. Thunder rumbling in the distance and ibis flying above added to the romantic setting. Blue and white vessels filled with blue hydrangea greeted the guests as they were given a program and a seagrass fan for use during the ceremony. The bride and her father walked down the aisle as instrumentalists, Classical Charleston, played Edelweiss.
As the wedding party meandered down the oak tree-lined path to the Cotton Dock for the garden party-themed reception, the bride twirled both her bouquet and her hand-sewn macramé bag given by her mother and crafted in Lake Como, Italy.
Guests were met at the doorway with a basil strawberry lemonade and vodka signature cocktail and fried green tomatoes, stuffed mushrooms and smoked salmon appetizers. As the setting sun beckoned guests onto the porch during Cocktail Hour, the rain fell softly on the roof and adjacent Boone Hall Creek.
Tall and short arrangements in blue and white vases featured blue and green hydrangea, ivory and O’hara garden roses, blue delphinium, cafe au lait dahlias, curly willow and cattails, native to the bride’s region, and graced the round tables of blue and white linens. Rectangular tables had blue and white striped linens with dramatic tablescapes of many containers of varying shades of blues, whites and greens in blue and white vases.
Three food stations served alongside the boxwood wall. Guests were served traditional low country fare with an uptown flair, including beef loin, shrimp and grits and local white fish plates. The bride and groom cut the wedding cake with a saber that belonged to the bride’s maternal grandfather. The cake was heavily textured with hummingbird, yellow almond and strawberry sour cream pound cake layers and iced with vanilla almond buttercream.
Music filled the evening with entertainment by the Mo’ Sol Band of Atlanta, Georgia. The bride and groom danced to I Can’t Take My Eyes Off Of You and the bride and her father danced to Sweet Caroline.
Later in the evening Southern fried chicken and waffle cones were served as late night snacks with maple and apple-smoked bacon remoulade.
Caroline and Andrew were bid goodbye with sparklers and drove off to Planters Inn in Charleston, South Carolina, a relais & chateaux property in a vintage Rolls Royce.
