Battle of the Creek an underrated rivalry

BY BRANDON SPECK
DAILY JOURNAL
There is a creek in Van Vleet that is not a part of any Dr. Seuss book. Tonight, Okolona and Houston battle for it on Okolona’s side of the underappreciated Chickasaw body of water.
Both at 2-0 and Okolona at No. 5 in the Journal’s small school rankings, the Chieftains and Hilltoppers face off in a rivalry not as known as some of its neighbors, Monroe’s A-Game or Calhoun’s Skuna River Rivalry, The Battle of the Creek.
“I know when I was in school (at Houston), it was usually the first game of the year at that time,” Okolona coach Jack Clark said. “You sort of based your season on how that game went.”
It’s history is infused with stories the likes of a burned “O” on Houston’s field and one band playing taps in front of a bitterweed wreath.
Houston has won four of six consecutive meetings and is fresh off a win against then-No. 1 small school Calhoun City. The Toppers defense has allowed a total of six points.
Okolona, meanwhile, is averaging 31 points per game.
“It’s a big deal in Chickasaw County,” said Houston coach William Cook. “Both sides of the county want to get after each other.”
The winner won’t actually get the alleged creek, but will get a trophy and for 12 months crossing that creek will be a reminder of its latest battle.
“There was a lot of dislike between the two communities,” Clark said. “I don’t know that that’s still there. Coach-wise, I’m a lot more looking at Xs and Os, but I know the kids, when the schedule comes out, are going to look and see where we play Houston and I’m sure they’re the same over there.”
